The Creek Wood basketball teams headed across the Williamson County line Tuesday night for a clash with Fairview, and came out with a pair of impressive wins and a sweep of the season series against their district foes.
The Lady Red Hawks dumped Fairview in the first meeting of the season, and with the Lady Jackets dealing with an injury Creek Wood upended the home team in the rematch. A total of 6 Lady Red Hawks scored in the 20-6 opening quarter, led by Taylor Moore with a pair of threes and Raegan Hohl with 5 points. Audrey Cox had 4 points to lead Fairview in the first.
Creek Wood won the second 11-4, led by Hohl with another 5 points, and added to a 31-10 halftime lead with a 19-4 third quarter. Moore bombed 3 more threes in the third while Lydia Edmondson netted 6 points and Hohl 4 as the lead ballooned to 50-14 after three quarters of play. The big lead triggered a mercy-rule running clock in the fourth, and despite 6 points from Cox the Lady Red Hawks won the final frame 8-6 for a 58-20 win. Madison Hayes had 4 points for the Lady Red Hawk reserves down the stretch.
Moore had a game-high 15 points on 5 made threes for Creek Wood, while Hohl had 14 including a three and Edmondson added 8; a total of 10 players scored for the Lady Red Hawks on the road. Cox was the only Lady Yellow Jacket in double figures with 14 points; she was the only player in the game with points in every quarter.
The Red Hawks had to sweat out a 1 point win with less than 2 seconds left and a Yellow Jacket at the free throw line to get a 52-51 win in the boys’ game in Charlotte. Tuesday night, Creek Wood had another game get down to a single score with under 4 minutes left, but the game was not nearly the nailbiter the first meeting was.
Coulter Dotson showed early that he was in for a big night, nailing a pair of threes in a 12 point first quarter, pacing the Red Hawks in a 19-8 first quarter. Allen Miller added 4 points and Aaron Daniel chipped in 3 for Creek Wood. Sammy Sanborn had 4 points in the first, handling half the scoring for Fairview. The Jackets battled back with a 12-10 second, with DJ Estes coming off the bench for a trey and Kam Harris-Lusk streaking past the defense for a pair of baskets. Dallas Hall had a pair of longballs for Creek Wood in the frame, while Dotson poured in 4 points, and the Red Hawks led 29-20 at the half.
The third quarter was a 13-13 wash, with Estes and Stephen Bledsoe each hitting a pair of threes for Fairview while Daniel had 6 points and Dotson 5 including a three for the Red Hawks. Down 42-33 entering the fourth, the homestanding Yellow Jackets pitched a defensive shutout and cut the lead down to 42-39 with 3:43 left, but Creek Wood denied a comeback. Miller buried a clutch three, Dotson went off for 7 big points, and Garrett Dolinich hit a pair of free throws to ice the game as Creek Wood held on for a 54-41 win.
Dotson led the way with a game-high 28 points and 4 threes for Creek Wood, while Daniel had 9 points, Miller 7, and Hall 6. Bledsoe led the Yellow Jackets with 11 points including 2 threes, while Estes had 3 threes for 9 points and Nick Hester added 9 points on the post.
