CW Girls Topple Purple Pounders

The Creek Wood Lady Red Hawks upset the apple cart at the Spring Fling on Tuesday afternoon. Creek Wood drew Chattanooga Central in the first round, a school with a state title in the trophy case, and a school making its eleventh appearance in the tournament.

Bailey Griffith lost her scoreless innings streak at 28 as the Lady Purple Pounders made it 1-0 in the first. The Lady Red Hawks would not be denied, however, as a fifth inning rally and some insurance lifted the plucky Creek Wood side to its fifth win at the softball state tournament in school history, 6-1.

Ina Henderson led off the bottom of the first with a walk for Chattanooga Central, and with two outs, Tatum Morgan drove her in for a 1-0 Lady Purple Pounder lead. Griffith would not work a clean inning until the sixth, but she was dominant and cool under pressure. The Lady Red Hawks were overpowered, but didn’t get a runner into scoring position against Brooke Parrott until the fourth. In the fifth, Sam England led off with a double, and two batters later Kensli Douthit reached on an error in center. With Madeline Kilpatrick running for England at third and Douthit at first, Analeigh Coursey blasted a 1-out, 2-RBI double, and Creek Wood had its first lead 2-1. Jase Jackson would score Coursey on a 2-out single, and Creek Wood took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

After Central got a runner to second and no farther in the bottom of the fifth, both sides went in order in the sixth. Creek Wood was the road team due to the coin toss, so they batted in the top of the seventh only to find some insurance runs. Douthit ripped a solo homer to center with one out, Coursey reached on an error, and Griffith helped her own cause with a 2-run bomb.

In the bottom half, Griffith gave up a single, then hit a batter in the ankle, but escaped trouble with a line-out and two fly-outs to preserve the 6-1 win. Griffith scattered 6 hits and 3 walks, allowing the one earned run while striking out 12 according to the TSSAA in 7 complete innings. Parrott allowed 6 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks, fanning 9. Griffith also went 1-for-4 with the 2 run homer, while Coursey was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, Douthit went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, 2 runs scored, and the RBI, and Jackson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Creek Wood faces CAK on Wednesday evening around 5:30, or approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the McNairy Central/Greenbrier game that starts at 4pm. CAK ripped Dyersburg 10-0 in 5 innings on Tuesday night. Chattanooga Central faces Dyersburg in the losers’ bracket Wednesday morning at 11:30am.
