Tennessee broadcasting legend John Ward passes away at 88

“Voice of the Vols” John Ward died on Wednesday at age 88. Ward was the voice of University of Tennessee football and basketball from 1965-1998.

The Vol Network put out this statement on Twitter Wednesday night.

A Tennessee graduate in 1954, Ward had a career as an advertising executive as well as being the radio voice of the Volunteers. He was known for his many catch phrases such as “give him six” and “it’s football time in Tennessee”. After announcing his retirement in 1998, the Vols went on to win the national title game in the Fiesta Bowl, Ward’s last game of his football broadcasting career.
