The Lady Cougars roared to a blowout victory in their first home game of the year. Facing an overmatched Spring Hill squad, Coach Greg Tipps use his bench liberally but still Dickson racked up 87 points in an 87-14 win over the Lady Raiders.
The early momentum immediately swung in Dickson’s favor and they never looked back. Spring Hill was forced to take two timeouts in the first 3:45 of the game to try and sort themselves out. But the Lady Cougars proved to be too much. Their offense shot 57% on the night while their defense held Spring Hill to just 14% from the floor.
Cierra Smith was the star of the show. She scored 23 points and had 5 steals to go along with the offensive output. Emily Beard had 13 and Ryan Roberts dropped in 10 points as well.
The Cougars faced a tougher battle but the result was the same as they came out on top 64-57. Spring Hill jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead before Trey Weidman sparked the offense with his first basket. That inspired an 8-0 run that put Dickson in front and they would never relinquish their lead. DJ Stacey, Jacob Murphree, and Tez Coleman all hit threes in the first quarter giving Dickson a 17-15 edge after one.
In the second quarter, Murphree and Weidman used strong defense to lead to big time offense. The pair combined for 14 of the Cougars 19 second quarter points.
Leading 36-30 at the half the Cougars worked on expanding their lead in the second half. After a slow start to the half by both teams Dickson rolled off 10 straight points to go in front 46-30. Spring Hill rallied to trim the gap to 14 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame the Cougars maintained a 14-16 point margin and iced the game down the stretch. After a Spring Hill timeout with nearly four minutes left Dickson went into a hold on offense and Spring Hill was forced to foul to try and extend the game. Coach Jason Tigert sent in the reserves in the final minutes which let the Raiders close the gap to 61-54 even though the result was never in doubt.
Weidman led with his defense and turned it into point several times as he racked up 14 points and 10 rebounds. Murphree led the team in scoring with 16 points.
